About our district

Located on the mid-coast of New South Wales, Taree is nestled in the bend of the Manning River and is the traditional Country of the Gathan-speaking Aboriginal people, the Biripi and Worimi.

It was settled by Europeans in 1831 for its rich rural farmland where dairy, beef, cattle and timber industries still prosper, and is considered the centre of a significant agricultural district.

The region belongs to the Federal seat of Lyne, the State seat of Myall Lakes and the local government area of MidCoast Council.

MidCoast Council is the largest Council area in the Hunter covering 30.5% of the region and 1.25% of NSW.  It has a population of approximately 96,579 people living in around 50,346 household.  The projected population for the MidCoast region is 108,760 by 2041.

There are two main population centres in the MidCoast area, Taree and Forster-Tuncurry.

Taree offers a wide range of regional services and facilities, including Manning Base Hospital. The Manning Base Hospital provides medical services for the MidCoast and is a significant employer that attracts service industries nearby.

At a local level, the existing Manning Base Hospital is referred to and operates as a Rural Referral hospital providing a range of health care services to the population of Taree, Gloucester and Great Lakes regions within the Mid-Coast LGA.
